My new best friend Elaine has been working hard commenting my posts and helping me on posting more freebies! :-) Thank you Elaine, you make my day! Today I should be working on my portfolio because I'm really intending to look for a job, so I will combine my posts today and give you all three freebies plus a bonus rose that isn't part of the digikit. I hope you can find some use for these! These are all for personal use, not to be republished or sold. If you use these for your artistic layouts, I would love to see the result! :-) This background paper is 12" x 12" and other files are pretty large too.

Tänään minun tulisi keskittyä portfolioni väsäämiseen, sillä minun todellakin täytyisi etsiä töitä elääkseni, joten tänään yhdistän kaikki kolme kappaletta samaan postiin ja lisään kaupanpäällisiksi vielä yhden ruusun, joka ei kuulu tähän digisettiin. Ehkä sille silti löytyy käyttöä. Nämä ovat kaikki edelleen vain henkilökohtaiseen käyttöön. Tiedostot ovat suurikokoisia. Jos käytät näitä johonkin, olisin todella ilahtunut, jos saisin nähdä lopputuloksen! :-)

Conservation of the endangered seal / Uhanalaisen hylkeen suojelu

Yesterday I was talking about the upcoming elections next month. I have been trying to find a candidate by making election tool tests provided by the largest newspaper and the national television. These tests are so difficult that I'm having hard time answering the questions. There are really tricky questions concerning the economy of the country, taxes, nuclear energy, social security and pensions, health care system and adoption rights for sexual minorities... and so on, even about protection of endangered species in my country. I have clear opinions on some certain issues (I have no idea why people would like to bury nuclear waste on their backyards to potentially suffer for the radiation for the next 100 000 years or so) but then there are questions that simply are beyond my understanding.

I was surprised that there actually was a direct question about protecting the endangered Saimaa ringed seal. This is the only endemic species in Finland and one of the most endangered species in Europe. There are only 270 individual seals in lake Saimaa and the population is currently so small that it is going to extinct unless some radical protection is implemented. Every year seal pups drown because of fishing nets and their reproductions is severely disturbed by people and their leisure activities around the lake and on the ice. Presently most candidates seem to think that the present efforts to conserve this species are adequate, even though it's evident that only half of the pups ever reach adulthood and that the species is greatly affected by humans. I wouldn't be too proud to live in a country that managed to drive it's only endemic species into extinction. After all, there was a time when there were thousands of these seals in lake Saimaa.

Eilen juttelin ensi kuun vaaleista. Olen yrittänyt etsiä sopivaa ehdokasta vaalikoneilla, noilla loistavilla välineillä, joita järjestävät mm. suurin sanomalehtemme ja kansallinen televisioyhtiömme. Vaalikoneiden kyssärit ovat niin vaikeita, ettei oma tekninen tietämykseni ja vaihtoehtojen kartoitustaitoni ihan kata kaikkia alueita. Hankalia kysymyksiä on kaikilta politiikan alueilta, maan talouteen, veroihin, ydinvoimaan, sosiaaliturvaan, eläkkeisiin, homojen adoptio-oikeuteen ja luonnonsuojeluun liittyen. Joistain aiheista minulla on ihan perusteltuja mielipiteitä (en esimerkiksi ymmärrä, miksi kukaan haluaisi haudata säteilevää ydinjätettä takapihalleen tuhansiksi vuosiksi), mutta on myös paljon aihepiirejä, joista minulla ei ole kovinkaan paljon sanottavaa.

Olin oikeastaan yllättynyt, että hesarin vaalikoneessa oli suora kysymys saimaannorpan suojelusta. Tämähän on Suomen ainoa kotoperäinen eli endeeminen laji, sekä yksi Euroopan uhanalaisimmista eläinlajeista. Hylkeitä on uusimpien tietojen nojalla vain 270 kappaletta, mikä ei ole elinkelpoinen populaatiokoko, ja laji tulee kuolemaan sukupuuttoon, ellei populaatiota saada kasvatettua radikaaleilla suojelutoimenpiteillä. Joka vuosi hylkeenpoikasia kuolee kalaverkkoihin, viime kesänäkin molemmat onnistuneesti radiopannoilla varustetut pennut löytyivät verkoista hukkuneina. Saimaannorppien kevättalvinen pesintä taas häiriintyy yhä enenevissä määrin ihmisten toiminnan seurauksena; esimerkiksi moottorikelkkailu ajaa helposti häiriintyvät hylkeet pesistään. Tästä huolimatta useimmat eduskuntavaaliehdokkaat näyttävät olevan sitä mieltä, että nykyiset suojelutoimet ovat riittävät! Siltikin, että nykyisillään vain puolet kuuteista saavuttaa aikuisuuden ja että nimenomaan ihmiset häiritsevät hylkeiden lisääntymistä ja ovat niille suurin uhka nyt, kun luonnon myrkkykuorma ei enää tapa hylkeitä. Enpä olisi kovin ylpeä eläessäni maassa, joka on onnistunut tappamaan ainoan kotoperäisen lajinsa sukupuuttoon. Saimaannorppia on joskus elänyt Saimaassa tuhatmäärin.

Now to the freebie of this post... yesterday I started with beige, so I will continue with beige and post a background paper. Yes, I know it looks dull but not every paper can be bright and colourful. ;-) Sometimes you need some basic elements as well. This is for personal use as always.

Ja sitten viimein näihin skräppäysmateriaaleihin; tässä on eilisen etiketin jatkoksi beige taustapaperi. Vähän tylsältähän se näyttää, mutta joskus tarvitaan ihan peruselementtejäkin. Ei kaikki paperitkaan voi olla värikylläisiä. ;-) Henkilökohtaiseen käyttöön tämäkin.

Life is filled with everyday dilemmas. Bigger and smaller ones. Today I have used a lot of time pondering whether I should vote in the next parliamentary elections and if yes, then who should I vote. There are various problems I have not been able to solve yet. I'm concerned because of the raise of certain parties and would like to make a counter act by voting some other party. I haven't been able to find the right party nor the right person yet. And if I happen to vote for a person that doesn't get enough votes in the elections, my vote will go to some other person of the same party. So what matters is which party one is going to vote rather than which person. I hate this. Sometimes I even start to wonder if there's much sense in democracy because my voice will never get heard anyway... (Now shoot me before I go any further)

Well, this has been my time waster today and I think I could have used my day way more productively. Thank you Elaine and Peggy, because of you two lovely ladies I will post something today. :-) This is a beige label for personal use.

Elämä on täynnä päivittäisiä pulmia, pienempiä ja isompia. Tänään olen kuluttanut ihan luvattoman paljon aikaa miettimällä tulevia eduskuntavaaleja. Pitäisikö äänestää, ja jos kyllä, niin ketä? Tähän liittyy mielessäni useita ratkaisemattomia ongelmia: ensinnäkin, tietyn puolueen viimeiaikainen kannatus saa minussa aikaan halun äänestää ihan vain vastapainoksi. Mutta mitä puoluetta ja ketä ehdokasta? Ensinnäkin, on äärimmäisen vaikeaa löytää ainakaan vaalikoneen perusteella ketään, joka olisi samaa mieltä riittävän monista asioista. Ja ovatko ne vaalikoneen kysymyksetkään kovin relevantteja? Toisekseen suhteellinen vaalitapa aiheuttaa minulle ongelmia. Jos sattuisinkin löytämään henkilön, jota haluaisin äänestää, eikä hänen äänimääränsä olekaan riittävä, menevät hänen äänensä jollekin toiselle samassa puolueessa. Tärkeämpää siis kuitenkin on löytää oikea puolue, kuin oikea ehdokas. Ottaa päästä. Joskus jopa epäilen koko demokratian mielekkyyttä, kun huomaan, ettei ainakaan minun ääneni kuitenkaan tule kuulluksi. (Niin, en minä silti tiedä mahtaisinko olla tyytyväisempi vähemmän demokraattisessakaan valtiossa...)

Tämmöinen on tänään vienyt mentaalikapasiteettiani ihan liikaa, ja tuottavamminkin olisin voinut päiväni käyttää. En mitenkään taloudellisessa mielessä, vaan henkilökohtaisessa mielessä tuottavammin. Kiitokset Peggylle ja Elainelle kommenteista, näiden kahden ihastuttavan naisen vuoksi saan taas tänään jotain postattavaa. :-) Tässä yksi beige etiketti henkilökohtaiseen käyttöön.

Pink Rosy Background Paper 12 x 12 / Vaaleanpunainen ruusutaustapaperi

I'm on slow motion today. It's cloudy and the clouds are throwing some sleet around the place. I should be concentrating on my job application. But with the headache that attacked me last night and is still going strong I just seem to be doing things with no point at all. I hope this paper will go to some good use. ;-) If anyone of you ends up using this in a scrapbook, I'd be delighted to see your lay-out! Tänään käyn kyllä tosi hitaasti. Taivas on umpipilvessä ja lisäksi tulee räntää. Sen lisäksi sain eilen vaivoikseni päänsäryn, joka ei vaan tunnu hellittävän, joten työhakemus, jota minun pitäisi nytkin hioa, saa odottaa otollisempaa hetkeä. Toivottavasti tämä taustapaperi tulee hyötykäyttöön! Jos joku tulee käyttäneeksi tätä skräppisivussaan, haluaisin nähdä lopputuloksen. :-) Lapsille pitää mennä keittämään vadelmasoppaa, joten minut löytää keittiöstä. ;-) Mukavaa päivää kaikille! Flowery corset for the 5th comment / Kukallinen korsetti viidennestä kommentista

I just found out that there has been heavy earth quakes and zunamis in Japan, and it's so strange to look outside and see the grey, calm and snow covered view over here. The heaviest thing we've had here for a couple of days here are some heavy winds. Nothing too dramatic. I'm waiting to hear more news from Japan and wish that people there are surviving.

So I still have to post ONE more freebie and it comes here! I hope you like corsets. I have used this same corset with different textures on it for some of my ATCs, so I obviously like it lots. The first one is without shadow and the second one carries a shadow. Now I NEED MORE COMMENTS to be able to post some more freebies! :-) Remember, this is a comments game after all. These are for personal use alone.

One of the reasons I remembered Artwolf today is that the background paper freebie I'm posting now is based on an antique page that she donated to me last year. She is a very generous and kind person and has enlightened me several times with her gorgeous artwork and materials that one can't find here where i live. Many times she has obviously guessed that I'm in a need of inspiration to get me going. So the page has been used for several purposes already (and is still intact since I have scanned it for my purposes) and here's one of the ways I've used it so far. You can download this for your personal purposes but beware, it's quite a large file. Just klick on the image below to open the downloadable file.

I really admire my dear friend Artwolf, she is a fine and genuine person and she knows how to turn any stamp into a beautiful work of art! She is one of my favourite fellow artists and she makes great cards and ATCs. Since I haven't been active for a long time, I have missed lots of her work lately and was delighted to find this. It looks quite modest because of the colour scheme but is finely detailed and I find it so charming. Artwolf, if you ever read this, I'm honoured to know you. :-)

Saanko tutustuttaa teidät ystävääni Artwolfiin? Hän on aito ja oikeasti mukava ihminen, ja lisäksi hän osaa loihtia mistä tahansa leimasimesta hienon taideteoksen. Hän on yksi suosikeistani, ja tekee aivan upeita postikortteja ja ATC-kortteja. Koska olen pitkän aikaa ollut kuulumattomissa, minulta on jäänyt paljon hänen töitään huomiotta viime aikoina. Olin ilahtunut nähdessäni tämän. A Transparent Label / Läpinäkyvä etiketti

Here's another piece for today, and this is a transparent label in png-format. Of course the transparency doesn't work in printed media (unless you print it on a transparent film!) but you can conveniently lay it on top of other items and they will still be visible from beneath. Yes, I'm not sure if it's handy or not, probably there aren't too many places where you'd actually find it useful, but it's here anyway. Just klick on this image below to open the downloadable image. Long Time No Seen / Tainnut aikaa vierähtää viime näkemästä

I have been away for... what - 5 months now? No, I have not been traveling (I wish I had) and I haven't been particularly busy either. I'm just one of those people who get tired if there's no feedback at all! According to my stats there have been hundreds or rather thousands of viewers so far (not that it would be impressive at all in the blogosphere) and lots of people download stuff from this blog, but very few ever leave a comment. Yes, I know it's a common problem but then again if there's no comments then I have no reason to post either! During these 5 months that I have been sleeping on my desk waiting for any kind of feedback, I have received 5 comments in total! But what I'm genuinely happy for is, that I seem to have gained a couple of new followers. Welcome dear friends, it's always nice to have more people on board; the more the merrier!

I'm still eagerly waiting for comments so that I could one day upload the last piece of my digikit! For now, here's one more. As always, this is strictly for personal use alone. It's a nice rose tag which you can use for your scrapbooking purposes or just print it out as many times as you wish and use for decorating your gifts, cards or jars or... well, let me know what you can think of. ;-)

Olen nyt tainnut "lomailla" viitisen kuukautta. En sentään ole päässyt matkustelemaan (kunpa vain) enkä muutenkaan ole ollut mitenkään erityisen kiireinen. Mutta kuka tahansa väsyy odottelemaan työpöydän ääressä, jos minkäänlaista palautetta ei koskaan tule. Tilastojeni mukaan täällä on käynyt satoja, ellei tuhansia ihmisiä, ja valtavan monet latailevat täältä materiaalia käyttöönsä viikoittain. Aniharvat kuitenkaan vaivautuvat jättämään kommenttia. Tämähän on tietenkin ihan yleinen ongelma, mutta kun kerran olen päättänyt syöttää tavaraa ladattavaksi kommentteja vastaan, niin eipä sitä ole paljon postattavaa, jos kommentit puuttuvat. Viimeisen viiden kuukauden aikana olen saanut huikeat 5 kommenttia... se tekee siis keskimäärin kommentin kuukautta kohden, vaikkei tuo olekaan totuus jakaumasta. Sen sijaan olen aidosti iloinen siitä, että mukaan on hypännyt pari uutta lukijaa! :-) Kiitos ja tervetuloa rakkaat ystävät, mukaan mahtuu hyvin!

Odottelen yhä innokkaasti kommentteja, jotta ehkä jonain kauniina päivänä saisin julkaistua sen viimeisenkin osasen tästä sarjasta - ja pääsisin uusien juttujen kimppuun, julkaistavaa kun makoilee varastossa aika läjät! Tähän postiin liitän ruusuisen etiketin, jota voi käyttää vaikka skräppäykseen tai korttiaskarteluun tai ihan vain lahjapakettiin. Wow, I reckon that my progress has been slowlier than that of a snail as it seems to be ages since I had a chance to post last time! Not that I hadn't had anything to post but because I've been waiting for a comment. ;-) My fingers have been itching to post some freebies outside the "La vie en rose" digikit too. Luckily I have a family as well so lately I have been too cought up with real life to have time to check my mail. Thank you for your kindness Peggy, I appreciate your comment. This freebie is pretty basic stuff, but let's face it, not all parts of a digikit can be too fabulous. Sometimes you do need some basic frames as well. Just click on the image to open the downloadable image. This is a png image and only for personal use, as usual.

Hitsikkä, edellisestä postauksestani on kulahtanut melkeinpä kuukausi! Eipä sillä, etteikö kuvamateriaalia riittäisi, mutta kun en ole jaksanut mainostella ympäriinsä, niin kommentteja tuntuu heruvan liian vähän blogipelin ylläpitämiseksi. Edistyminen on sujunut etanavauhdilla, jos ei hitaammin. Sormia on kyllä syyhyttänyt, sillä väkerryksiä on ehtinyt kertyä jo vino pino digisetin ulkopuoleltakin, ja tekisi mieli jakaa niitä muillekin. Thank you PeggyApl for dropping by and leaving a comment. Autumn is really busy time. It seems I haven't been able to do half of the things I'm suppopsed to be doing and especially my mailings have been delayed as I haven't found the time to go to post office! I hate been late or failing to do things so this bothers me a lot. I have been taking the kids to here and there and other places as well but I hope things will settle a bit next week. Is it only me or does this happen to others as well when autumn comes?

Minusta tuntuu, etten ole saanut hoidettua puoliakaan niistä asioista, jostka pitäisi ehtiä tekemään, ja etenkin postitukseni ovat pahasti myöhässä. Joka päivä ilmaantuu jotain yllättävää ja lapsia pitää viedä sinne tänne ja tuonne. Yes, such an intriguing title, isn't it...? Well, after all this post is all and only about a cardboard box! You know what, this isn't a shoebox. I have seen many crafts and tutorials with old shoeboxes, but this is a box that came with frozen "Carelian pies" (traditional Finnish pastry made of rye-mix dough and rice pudding) and when I had baked all the pies and got left with an empty box I decided to make it useful. It's a sturdy box and very handy one too because the lid can be closed firmly. The box itself was quite ugly so to make it visually easier to look at (my poor sore eyes can't take anything ugly) I had to cover it.

I think we all agree that this PaPaYa! gift wrap by Anahata Katkin can't ever be called ugly so it's a perfect camouflage for my box. The box was really nice wearing nothing but the wrap itself, but then I got a bit carried away and continued the work on process with some "acessories" like bird stamps, metallic paper doily, Cavallini stickers, lace and glitter glue...

Yes, I do know that I could have designed my own print and my own stickers but since I happened to have all these stored in a closet I had to use them too, right? Besides I really like PaPaYa! and Cavallini products. It must be quite obvious that they are part of the sources of my inspiration. Now the box is serving a task in our wardrobe as a swim suit box! And if you were wondering about the doily, it's a label. So if it ever happened that I would forget what's inside, I can write it on top of the box. ;-)

Eikös ollutkin erikoisen jännittävä otsikko? No mutta, tämähän ei todellakaan käsittele mitään muuta kuin vain ja ainoastaan pahvilaatikkoa. Ja niin, tämäpä ei olekaan kenkälaatikko! Olen tottunut katselemaan muiden tekemiä kenkälaatikkoehostuksia, joten nyt pitää kehua, että tämäpä onkin karjalanpiirakkalaatikko! Kun piirakat oli paistettu ja syöty, ajattelin että hyvän ja tukevan laatikon voisi jotenkin hyödyntääkin. Laatikko itsessään oli kuitenkin sen verran ruma, etteivät rakkaat verkkokalvoni toki olisi kestäneet sellaista näkyä pakastimen ulkopuolella. Siksipä laatikko vaati pientä ulkoverhoilua.

Kukaan ei kai voi pahalla tahdollakaan sanoa tätä PaPaYa!-lahjapaperia rumaksi, joten se oli oikein hyvä maastotakki laatikolleni. Laatikosta sukeutuikin tosi salonkikelpoinen uudessa puvussaan, mutta sitten sain päähäni vielä vähän asustaakin sitä lintupostimerkeillä, metallikakkupaperilla, Cavallinin lintutarroilla, pitsillä ja kimalleliimalla. Eikä se ulkonäkö kai niillä kauheasti pahentunut. Pitsi ei ollut alunperin vaaleanpunaista, vaan se on väritetty akryylimaalilla.

Niin-niin, olisinhan minä voinut suunnitella ja tulostaa omankin kuvion, tarrat ja muut, mutta kun minulla kerran oli näitä kaapissa jemmassa (lahjapaperikin jo yli vuoden!) niin ehkäpä oli aika jo käyttääkin niitä. Ja sitä paitsi, Cavallinin ja Anahata Katkinin PaPaYa -tuotteet ovat minusta hyvin inspiroivia. Nyt laatikko palvelee tehtävässään uimapukulaatikkona vaatekaapissamme. Ja se kakkupaperi tuossa laatikon päällä... niin, se toimii etikettinä. En tosin usko, että koskaan voisin unohtaa näinkin helposti muistettavan laatikon sisällön, mutta joka tapauksessa tuohon olin ajatellut kirjoittaa tarvittaessa senkin.

I have been waiting for comments for a good while over here and I'm now pretty convinced that no-one at all is interested in seeing the rest of the items in my digikit and that I'll actually never get to post the OTHER freebies I've intended sharing with you, so I've made myself busy crafting some real crafts outside the digital world. ;-) You are still more than welcome to take part to my comments game, all of you, and I will be posting as many freebies as I get comments!

Now that I actually have some space for crafting too, I have been sewing, knitting and crocheting. But don't you worry, I have been doing some paper crafts as well. One million giraffes and a give-away pink giraffe

Here's a challenge for everyone and anyone, and you can do it by any medium except digital. So computer is not allowed for anything else but scanning or sending the final image.

There's a Norwegian guy who is trying to collect 1 million giraffes by the year 2011 and as his web page states today: "I've gotten 974 152 giraffes so far, so I only need 25 848 more and I have 137 days left to get. Please help me!" Let's help him! I first heard about this last night at ATCs for all forum where skyjules had posted the invitation to join.

I just uploaded mine. I already feel guilty for makin only ONE giraffe (yes, I manage to feel guilty just about anything...) so I may have to make some more giraffes in the near future. ;-) Anyone seeing this image can immediately spot that I have hit my glitter stash before starting with the long neck fellow.

I didn't plan my image at all as I just started to make whatever kind of giraffe to be uploaded to the giraffe gallery. So I didn't use any pens or pencils that require a steady hand, I just took my scissors and cut a free form giraffe out of a cardstock of some product package I found, there's ripped paper strips, some acrylic and crackle paint, some cake paper, some stamping and lots of glitter and some plastic beads. Oh, those butterfly wings I happened to find where I keep my papers and cut them out for the giraffe. Just because it's obvious that a giraffe needs to fly too... (isn't it?)

Here's an other piece from the digital design kit. It's obviously a tag and in png format with transparent background so that it can be integrated in digital designs. If you prefer jpg images for printing, I can transform some items of the kit into print sheets later on. I hope you will be able to use this for something!

We are going slowly but then again I'm in no hurry. Just a bit impatient! ;-) Anyone reading this should be informed about how to participate so I wrote an introduction on the right side bar. I will release an item belonging to the "La vie en rose" digikit for each comment. It doesn't need to be on any particular post, you can leave the comment on the post you prefer to comment.

I have stated out in my header pic that I will give out freebies for COMMENTS. Yet very few people have courage enough to leave one! Or maybe the rest of the people downloading stuff are just too lazy, I know... ;-) So let's start a game to encourage the rest of you. I'm a person who likes to interact with others and I do welcome any comments and suggestions. Also, if you have some finished pieces containing material that you have downloaded from this blog, I would LOVE to see it. This means, if you have a blog or a web gallery and you want to show your work, just link it back to the post containing the original download or just simply leave a comment with your own link! I do moderate my comments, but so far there has never been any that I would have needed to delete, so unless you're extremely rude I'm sure your comment will be published. :-)

This is the deal: I have made a digital design kit of some material I made earlier this year with a theme "La vie en rose" that was suggested by my dear friend France. I will release each piece for a comment. So the more comments the more content! After all the items have been published, I will then make the digikit downloadable at some place so that it can be downloaded all at once (or as multiple zip files as it is quite large as a single file...). I have no idea how come I haven't seen this before, but there is an excellent Flickr pool for artists to share free public domain images to use in collage art. You have to be a Flickr member and join the group too in order to be able to view and download images, but I guess those are pretty little steps to take as the pool has amazing count of 31,326 items and that number is naturally growing as people add more images. Also the good point is that the recommendation for the images added is high 300 dpi resolution which is great for artistic work.

Free and colourful envelope

I haven't been much for anything lately. I finally got all the furniture I need and I have been lucky (or just extremely patient) looking for them as the most expensive one cost only 15 €. That was a cupboard with glass doors, but I will have to cover the doors from inside (with some art maybe?) as I'm using it for storing the toys and it's not a pleasant sight... There's still work to be done on some of the articles, but for now on I'm just happy for not needing to go after more. I'm now well familiarized with every second hand store and flea market in my area.

So last weekend I finally got my hands on the task that has been waiting to be done, and that was framing some ATCs. I happened to have some frames ready at hand, and I used them. You can see them at my Flickr stream if you're interested (just scroll down the right side bar over here -> and click on the Flickr widget). When I got tired with framing more ATCs, I made a collage with real butterflies. I still have more butterflies to go and plans are ready, but I need to find some good frameing material for them as they would actually require an insect box or some kind of box meant for framing mementos or souvenirs.

Framing butterflies required some work as I didn't want to use glue, and the insect pins were too long for the frame I used. This collage contains an old map, some nice postal stamps, paper butterflies cut from a postcard and a bird and a red passion flower that I printed for this purpose. Originally I had thought I would frame all my butterflies in the same box with scientific names beneath them but then I got an urge to use them for various artistic projects. And here's the first of them. Let's see if I'll ever finish with the remaining projects!

Shay and Susie have been really kind leaving comments on my previous post, so I'm posting a freebie that required awfully lot of work, mainly because I didn't have a template ready made and it's just time consuming to build this kind of templates with free software. Also, editing the images wasn't quickly done as it contains quite (= too) many images! I have spent quite many nights with individual images and I wasn't able to finish it during one day, but it came out more or less as I had planned. :-D It's a crazy mix-match envie with no style at all, but I personally like it. Then again, my taste isn't necessary good taste, so you may be the judges of that. :-) It has been in my hard disk for quite a while already so maybe it's time to release it and let it live its own life.

This has been made for A4 size (200 ppi) but it could be scaled for smaller size. You could probably make it printable in letter size as well. This envelope with geisha, hot air balloon, roses and butterflies is for personal use alone and shouldn't be sold or distributed. You're welcome to print it for mailing your own letters, invitations, mail art and so on. And I do appreciate a link back if you have a blog or if you publish images of printed and folded envies somewhere. ;-)

Free ATC background fighting sorrow

So far no-one has even tried to recognize the beautiful lady in my earlier post. Bella Simonetta was still a very young woman when she died for an illness. (Apparently most (in)famous beauties die young?) She was a wife of a wealthy man, muse and model for artists and mistress to some... or so I've heard. All this happened some centuries ago, so who knows what is the truth.

I have been struggling today trying to decide what to do. I heard sad news the other day that my uncle had lost his wife. I become totally helpless in these situations. I know there are no words that could help a person who has lost a beloved spouse or other family member. You can't really do anything to make that person feel any better. And death is natural, we all must face it one day. I just become sad for the person who stayed behind with grief.

So, what does one do when she doesn't have words of her own to describe her feelings or to take part in the mourning? Well, I went to post office and bought a card with text appropriate for the occasion. Sigh... I hope my uncle doesn't mind it's not hand-made by myself. I just wasn't up to this challenge. I'm too emotional and empathetic when I encounter great sorrow or death and I'm not good at dealing with it. I feel crushed. I'm not sure if mourning people even pay attention to the cards and flowers people send to them. They probably start reading these messages only after the initial shock is over and they start to realize that the beloved one isn't around any more. Maybe they find comfort in the messages friends and relatives have sent, knowing that there are people who care.

Grief is something very personal, and it feels too intimate to invade that private space of mourning. One could probably use a strong and warm hug but maybe I'm not the right person to give such hug. I hope someone will do it for me though. My uncle is a kind human being and I hope people treat him the same he treats others.

I was quite disappointed with myself today because of not being able to handle this all and trying to make that and the feeling of sadness go away I made an ATC background to share with you. Once again, this is for personal use alone. Let me know if it's good for anything. I have used a photo I took of roses earlier this summer and combined it with some oriental elements. I have been THINKING about going out all day long since it seems to be a fairly nice day out there, but it seems I'm still stuck indoors. Well, for my kids' sake I'm still going to do that though. There are several playgrounds nearby so there's plenty to choose of. I've barely been at home lately as I love the sunshine and hot weather and can't bear to stay indoors just looking outside. Last summer I spend practically indoors because the kids were sick first one, then the other, then the first one again... So this summer I'm trying to take advantage of each sunny day. Hello my dear friends! No, I haven't forgotten about you, I've just been busy lately. My home still isn't done (and no, I'm not talking about hanging a couple of pictures which I will do after I have some real furniture first) and I have been up to designing things... This wouldn't really keep me busy if I had all day just for designing, but as I spend the full day with my kids I only can do these things at night when they are asleep. So I have practically been left with no sleep at all and in the end I had to sleep one full night last night after more or less being awake for a couple of weeks... well, to tell the truth I did sleep something like 2 hours each night, no wonder I became much more placid than usual.

We have had such beautiful weather here and since we have light nights too, I'm so tempted to go outside for a walk in the middle of the night. I love the sunlit summer nights and I wish it could continue endlessly. Please don't remind me that we're already heading for autumn and then the winter comes again... Every year I fear that I will get too depressed for the lack of light and just stay in bed 'till next spring. Well, of course my children would now take care of waking me up in a less gentle way if I refused to get up by myself. Earlier I just relied on an alarm clock.

Last year I bought extra help, a Philips wake-up light. It doesn't make me any less sleepy during the day, but at least the light gets me up every morning. It has 4 alarm sounds as well, and I had thought that it would be awesome to wake up with birds singing next to my bed, but in the reality they have chosen such an irritating bird song that I couldn't even listen to it more than once. Why didn't they go for a pleasant sound? Something like a blackbird maybe? (Staff at Philips, if you people read this, please release a product with a blackbird singing and then hand one for me just for giving this tip!) But actually you don't need any sound to wake you up as the light itself takes care of it. I have tested the drumming sound as well, which I find the less irritating of the available ones, but it seems that I'm the only one who wakes up with that sound. My children stay asleep. However, they often want to listen to that alarm sound because they like to dance to the music!

Well, I haven't had any problems waking up nor staying awake now that there's plenty of light, and I quite enjoy it. I have spent lots of time outdoors; we make long walks (well, it's mainly Susie doing the walking and the little ones like to sit back and relax and eat their picnic lunch even though I try to make them walk with their own two feet) and now that we have had warmer days we have gone to beach! We live very close to an estuary so there are several beaches by the river and by the sea as well where we can go. It's always windy on the seaside, so it's never too hot.

Today I finally noticed that I really should try and get at least some room cleared for a sewing machine. That's because I didn't have any hat to protect my head against sunburn. My hair is blond so it doesn't offer much protection. Since I couldn't find a hat nor any time or space for sewing one, I finally bought a crocheted one from the market place by the sea. It was quite pricey for me, but a lot less expensive than the hats I had been looking at in a department store earlier. Also, I hadn't been able to find my size (my head is almost as tiny as a pea, at least it seems so every time I try on any hat at all) and the crocheted hat was of a flexible size which made it quite comfy as well! The hat is handmade by some local crafter, so I guess it was quite a bargain after all...

I used to be the one sewing and knitting hats to my relatives and friend's children, so I guess something needs to be corrected now that I seem to be buying things rather than making them myself. Note to myself: use the knitting needles and the wool you have stored in the wardrope before they turn into relics. Besides, now is the time to use them, if you intend to knit winter wear for the kids before winter. If you wait too long, you won't have any when the time comes, and then you will have to buy something again. Let me be warned now.

Digital ATCs / Digitaalisesti tehdyt ATC-kortit

This issue has bothered me ever since I started making ATCs. Not because I had any problem with it, but because most of everyone else seems to have some problem with it. I make digital ATCs. It seems, that there are very few people who think it's OK. I understand that there are people who like only hand drawn or painted ATCs. They don't even accept collaged cards. Then there are niche styles like zetti or zentangles that some people adore and some really hate. There are people who only collect some certain themes. I get all that.

My cards are collaged and the medium I use is computer. I could probably draw on the computer as well, but I just love making collages and combining elements that didn't originally belong together. My style doesn't give any of that impression though, usually the result looks like the combined elements were supposed to be together. Like the image had always been that way.

My style or the quality of the cards has never been an issue. I've never heard anyone complaining about that. Most people who receive my ATCs compliment on the good quality of the card, like it had been a surprise for them. My cards are printed on a quality matte photographic paper and mounted on a sturdy cardboard with finished backings as well. What is it that make people to refuse trading with me then? Well, the fact that my cards are produced digitally.

I originally started making digital ATCs for a certain reason. I had been staying at home for over 3 years taking care of two little children with no chance of ever going anywhere without them or ever having any child-free days. I hadn't done any art since... well, since the first child was born. I was living in a really small apartment with no space for making any art either. Since I spent all my time with my children I could only have time for myself when they were both sound asleep. (If you don't have children then you may not even come to think that they don't necessarily catch the sleep simultaneously.) A baby and a toddler in a crowded space is a hazard; one should never forget any scissors, knives or good quality artist pens or markers anywhere on sight.

I have always been a creative person who has never considered drawing a "hobby". For me it's almost as automatic as breathing or walking; when I see a pen I pick it and start to draw. When I was a kid people often asked me if drawing was my hobby. I always answered no. It's not a hobby. It's a way of being, a way to reflect oneself, a way to communicate. It's like a basic need for me. And now I had been without it for 3 years and more. I had to start creating again, no matter how. And then I saw my laptop. A lamp was lit inside my head as I started wondering how come I hadn't come to think about it before! I could create digital images just as I created images or 3-dimensional art by other mediums.

The comments I have received vary from really nice to quite strange: "I'm sorry, but quite frankly I could make this kind of image if I wanted to because I know how to make digitals." That's one of the strangest. Quite frankly I could make quite many of the collages and hand drawn images I see if I wanted to because I also know how to use scissors and glue or how to hold a pen. Do I walk around telling that to others? No. Quite frankly I also think that copying someone else's work would be quite ignorant (and illegal too) and that one should respect the ideas of others even if one was able to duplicate the work of art! And why would you want to make the same image when you are capable of making your own unique work?

You can always get inspired by someone and want to make something similar, but not exactly the same. So, if I saw an image I really like, I don't rush to try and make the same image myself, I just admire the fact that someone had a great idea before I did and made a great piece of art! Sometimes different people have the same idea, and they make similar images, but they are still unique and different from each other. So why is it so hard to appreciate other people's ideas? What makes someone say "I could do that too" instead of "that's a great idea / picture, I wish I had made it!" ? Is it away from you somehow? Do you believe that there's only limited amount of ideas in the world and if someone gets one, you are left without any?

Another thing is that some people seem to think that digitals are super easy and amazingly fast to do. They are not. And they can get really time consuming if you don't have all the professional level programs like Photoshop. For many of my cards I have worked for days. I have searched for materials, sometimes I've made a trip to some place (with two kids along) to take photos, sometimes I have spent nights searching for material in the Internet. (And you all know how much I appreciate those who scan vintage material and give it to us all to use for free!) Some material I have bought and scanned. I have worked on backgrounds, combining elements, changing sizes and forms and colours, cutting, pasting, and so on. I don't use brushes on my own ATCs, so everything is "digitally crafted" without handy fast commands. I have combined 3 different freeware programs in order to achieve the quality I want (or at least to get close to it). When it seems to someone that I'm working rapidly, it's only because I'm using material that I have prepared earlier and stored for later use. I have stored backgrounds, self made masks, altered images and other material that I have made to be used when needed. I have done this all on my small laptop, without any media tablets and with the integrated touch pad mouse. It is time consuming.

I think I would work way faster if I was making traditional collages, mixed media or drawings as paper, pens, paint and glue are materials I'm familiar with and have used since I was a kid. But let's face it: digital work isn't as messy and I can easily switch off the computer when my kids need my attention without any fear of leaving materials behind for someone to cut herself or get poisoned or sufocated or inspired to draw on walls or floor with markers or brake the tip of my best fineliners... Cutting and mounting the prints is a task I can schedule to be done at night when they have gone to sleep. It's simple and doesn't require too many different kinds of material. (And even so I have lost many of my best fineliners and found marker attacs on the floor!)

Right, so next time I hear someone telling me "I would love it if it wasn't a digital" I'd really like to know what you mean by that? I mean, my ATCs are not digitally delivered, I do print and mount them myself. They are not copies nor duplicates either, I have carefully made each of them and there's only one print of each. You never need to worry of someone else having the same card. If someone makes aquarels, do you tell the person "I'd really love it if it wasn't a water colour painting"?

I do trade for different mediums; hand drawn, painted, collaged, mixed medium, digital, cross stitch and so on. I wish the card I trade for is as unique as the card I'm trading. I trust that the person I'm trading with has used the best personal skills and knowlegde and made the card with care. That's it. I give away my best work and expect it from others as well. If it has my favourite theme (maybe a bird or a butterfly or some oher creature or flowers) I will be extremely pleased. I do not expect people to use the same amount of time and preparation for their cards that I use for mine. I have seen very simple cards with just a couple of funny lines of fineliner and I'm sure it couldn't have taken too many minutes to finish the drawing. But if the idea is fantastic, and the finished work is beautiful / funny / adorable it doesn't need to take ages to complete, does it?

Tämä aihe on vaivannut minua siitä lähtien kun aloin tehdä ATC-kortteja. Ei siksi, että se olisi itselleni ongelma, vaan siksi että se vaikuttaa olevan jotenkin vastenmielinen ajatus useimmille muille. Teen ATC-korttini digitaalisesti. Se on kovin harvan mielestä hyväksyttävää. Käsitän toki, että on ihmisiä, jotka pitävät vain käsin piirretyistä tai maalatuista kuvista. He eivät hyäksy edes kollaaseja. Sitten on erityisiä tyylejä kuten zetti ja zentangle, jotka joitenkin mielestä ovat todella ihastuttavia ja toisten mielestä taas lähinnä vihastuttavia. On ihmisiä, jotka keräävät vain tietyn aihepiirin kortteja. Tajuan.

Omat korttini ovat kollaaseja, ja käyttämäni tekoväline on tietokone. Voisin varmaan myös piirtää tietokoneella, mutta tykkään tehdä kollaaseja ja yhdistellä kuvia, joilla ei alunperin ollut mitään tekemistä keskenään. Tyylistäni ei kuitenkaan saa satunnaista vaikutelmaa, vaan lopputulos usein näyttää siltä, kuin uusyhdistetyt elementit olisivat aina kuuluneet yhteen.

Tyylini tai korttieni laatu ei koskaan ole ollut ongelman ydin. Niistä ei koskaan ole kukaan valittanut. Useimmat ovat kiitelleet korttieni tasoa, ikäänkuin se olisi tullut heille jotenkin yllätyksenä. Korttini on tulostettu laadukkaalle mattapaperille ja pohjustettu tukevalle pahville. Korttien kääntöpuolet on myös viimeistelty. Miksi sitten monet kieltäytyvät vaihtamasta kortteja kanssani? No siksi, kun ne on tehty digitaalisesti.

Alunperin aloin tehdä ATC- kortteja digitaalisesti tietystä syystä. Olin ollut kotona kahden lapsen kanssa jo yli 3 vuotta ilman mahdollisuutta mennä koskaan minnekään ilman lapsia tai viettää vapaapäiviä. En ollut päässyt taiteilemaan... no, siitä saakka kun ensimmäinen lapsi syntyi. Asuin tosi pienessä asunnossa, jossa ei oikein ollut tilaakaan tehdä mitään. Kahden lapsen kanssa eläessä aikaakin on vain silloin, kun molemmat lapset nukkuvat. (Lapsettomalle ei ehkä tule edes mieleen, etteivät lapsukaiset välttämättä satukaan nukahtamaan samaan aikaan.) Vauvan ja taaperon kanssa saa muutenkin olla tarkkana; unohdapa sakset, veitset tai laadukkaat taiteilijan tarvikkeet näkösälle, niin huonosti käy.
Olen lapsesta saakka ollut "luova" enkä ole pitänyt piirtämistä harrastuksena. Minulle se on melkein yhtä automaattista kuin hengittäminen tai kävely. Kun näen kynän, tartun siihen ja alan piirtää. Lapsena minulta usein kysyttiin, harrastinko piirtämistä. Vastasin aina kieltävästi. Ei se ole harrastus. Se on elämäntapa, tapa olla, peilata sisintään ja kommunikoida. Ja nyt olin ollut jo yli kolme vuotta ilman tätä perustarvetta. Minun oli pakko alkaa taas luoda jotain, tavalla tai toisella. Ja sitten tujotin tietokonetta lampun syttyessä päässäni, ja ihmettelin, miksen aiemmin ollut tajunnut sitä; voihan tietokoneellakin tehdä kuvia ihan yhtä lailla kuin muillakin välineillä.

Saamani kommentit ovat vaihdelleet mukavista tosi outoihin: "Anteeksi, mutta rehellisesti sanottuna voisin kyllä itsekin tehdä tuollaisen kuvan jos haluaisin, koska osaan työskennellä digitaalisesti." on yksi oudoimmasta päästä. Ihan rehellisesti sanottuna minäkin voisin tehdä aika monta niistä kollaaseista ja piirroksista, joita näen, koska osaan itsekin käyttää saksia, liimaa, kynää ja paperia. Sanonko kuitenkaan tuota ääneen? No en. Rehellisesti sanottuna minusta se on jo ajatuksenakin outo, ja toisen työn kopioiminen olisi paitsi typerää myös laitonta. Toisten ideoita ja töitä tulee kunnioittaa, vaikka teknisesti kykenisikin jäljentämään taideteoksen. Ja miksi kukaan haluaisi kopioida toisen työn, jos on kykenevä tekemään jotain omaperäistä?

Toisilta voi saada innoitusta ja halun tehdä jotain saman tyylistä, mutta ei kuitenkaan tarkalleen samanlaista. Kun siis näen jotain, mistä pidän, en suinkaan ryntää heti kopioimaan kuvaa, vaan ihastelen sitä, että joku sai loistavan ajatuksen ennen minua ja vieläpä toteutti sen upeaksi taideteokseksi. Joskus useampikin ihminen saa samanlaatuisen ajatuksen, ja toteutukset voivat muistuttaa suuresti toisiaan olematta kuitenkaan toistensa kopioita. Joten miksi ihmeessä sitten on niin vaikeaa arvostaa toisten ideoita? Mikä saa jonkun sanomaan "kyllä minäkin tuohon pystyisin" sen sijaan, että sanoisi "onpa hieno, kunpa se olisi minun!". Onko se jotenkin toiselta pois? Uskooko sanoja, että maailmassa on vain rajallinen määrä ideoita, ja että jos joku saa yhden, niin hänelle ei jää mitään?

Kokonaan oma aspektinsa on se, että jotkut kuvittelevat digitaalisten kuvien tekemisen olevan liian helppoa ja nopeaa. Se ei pidä paikkaansa. Ja vielä aikaa vievämpää siitä tulee, ellei käytössä ole ammattilaistason ohjelmistoja. useimpia korttejani olen työstänyt päiväkaupalla. Olen etsinyt materiaalia, joskus lähtenyt lasten kanssa kuvausretkelle, joskus istunut yökausia koneen äärellä etsien materiaalia netistä. (Ja kaikki varmaan tietävät, kuinka suuressa arvossa pidän heitä, jotka skannaavat materiaalia verkkoon meille muille ilmaiseksi käytettäväksi!) Osan materiaalista olen itse ostanut ja skannannut. Olen työstänyt taustakuvia, yhdistänyt elementtejä, muuttanut kokoa, muotoa ja väriä jne. Omissa korteissani en käytä ohjemoituja siveltimiä, joten kaikki on "digikäsityönä" tehty ilman pikakomentoja. Käytän kolmen ilmaisohjelmiston yhdistelmää saavuttaakseni tavoittelemani laadun (tai edes lähestyäkseni sitä). Jos ulkopuolisesta näyttääkin siltä, että jälkeä syntyy nopeasti, se johtuu vain siitä, että käytän jo aiemmin valmiiksi työstämääni materiaalia. Olen varastoinut taustakuvia, itsetehtyjä maskeja, muunneltuja kuvia ja muuta ennakkoon myöhempää käyttöä varten tekemääni materiaalia. Kaikki on tehty pienellä läppärillä, ilman edes erillistä hiirtä piirustusalustasta nyt puhumattakaan. Se on aikaavievää.

Työskentelisin varmasti nopeammin, jos tekisin perinteisiä kollaaseja tai piirroksia, koska paperi, kynät ja liima ovat minulle jo lapsuudesta tuttuja materiaaleja. Mutta realistisesti ajatellen: digitaalinen työskentely on huomattavasti siistimpää ja lapsiturvallisempaa. Sylimikron saa näppärästi kiinni, jos lapset tarvitsevat huomiota, eikä tarvitse pelätä että jälkeen jää jotain materiaalia, jolla voi leikata, tukehduttaa tai myrkyttää itsensä tai inspiroitua piirtämään lattiaan tai katkomaan piirustuskynien kärjet. Tulosteiden leikkuu ja liimaus ovat helposti ajallisesti rajattava toimenpide, jonka voi suorittaa vaikka iltayöstä lasten mentyä nukkumaan. Se on yksinkertaista, eikä vaadi kovin laajamittaista välineistöä. (Ja siitä huolimatta olen joskus löytänyt tussin jälkiä lattiasta ja piirustuskynät pilattuina!)

Eli, kun seuraavan kerran minulle sanotaan "Tykkäisin, ellei se olisi digitaalinen", niin haluanpa tietää, mitä se tarkoittaa? Koska enhän minä sentään digitaalista tiedostoa ole vaihtamassa, kyllä minä itse tulostan ja pohjustan työni. Korttini eivät myöskään ole kopioita, vaan jokainen on huolella valmistettu ja uniikki. Ei tarvitse kuvitella, että jollain toisella olisi samanlainen. Sanotaanko akvarellimaalarillekin, että "tykkäisin, ellei olisi vesivärityö"?

Itse vaihdan korttejani eri tekniikoilla tehtyihin; piirroksiin, maalauksiin, kollaaseihin, sekatekniikalla tehtyihin, digitaalisiin, ristipistoihin jne. Toivon, että vaihdokki on yhtä ainutlaatuinen kuin omakin korttini. Luotan, että kortin vaihtaja on käyttänyt parhaita henkilökohtaisia kykyjään ja taitojaan ja tehnyt kortin huolella. Siinä se. Itse luovutan aina parhaan työni, ja odotan toisilta samaa. Jos kortissa on vielä suosikkiteemani (vaikkapa lintuja tai perhosia tai muita luonnon ihmeitä), olen oikein mielissäni. Sen sijaan en odota muilta samaa ajallista panostusta kuin itse käytän töihini. Olen nähnyt niin yksinkertaisia parilla viivalla tehtyjä kuvia, että voin olla varma, ettei työn loppuun viemiseen ole vaadittu montaa minuuttia. Mutta tarvitseeko siihen ikuisuutta käyttääkään, jos lopputulos on hurmaava tai hupaisa?

New ATCs for trade / Uusia ATC -kortteja vaihtoon

I'm not sure if you still remember my butterfly ATC backing freebie. Well, like I told back then, I had made a trip to the zoological museum over here (and to the botanical garden during the same day) and taken some photos. The lighting conditions were really poor there but I managed to take some images of the butterfly collection and I really liked the results as well. So I combined them with some vintage ephemera and old looking items and made a digital collage series called "My butterfly collection". I adore both little birds and butterflies and old insect collections can be really fascinating too (well, why not new ones as well, but nowadays I prefer the butterflies being farm grown rather than harvested from their natural habitat).

En ole varma, muistaako kukaan enää perhosen kuvilla koristettua ilmaista ATC-taustaa, jonka postasin joitakin aikoja sitten. Olin silloin tehnyt retken sekä eläintieteelliseen museoon, että kasvitieteelliseen puutarhaan, ja saanut otettua joitain valokuvia perhoskokoelmista. Valaistusolot olivat todella heikot, mutta olin silti aika tyytyväinen tuloksiin. Yhdistin perhoskuviani vanhan oloisten elementtien kanssa, ja tein digikollaasisarjan nimellä "My butterfly collection" (Perhoskokoelmani). Tykkään kovasti sekä pikkulinnuista että perhosista, ja vanhat hyönteiskokoelmat voivat olla todella kiehtovia. (Tai miksei uudemmatkin, nykyään minusta vaan tuntuu ekologian kannalta kivemmalta ajatukselta, että koristeiksi kokoelmiin päätyvät perhoset olisivat kasvatettuja eikä luonnosta kaapattuja.)

I Have Been Tagged! / Minut on merkitty!

I have been tagged by Frarin. We have both been trading ATCs at ATCs for all so following that track I will be tagging Peggy apl seeds if she sees this! I haven't had an honour to trade with her yet, but I have seen her lovely hand drawn ATCs at her blog and ATCs for all gallery. The rule was to look up the 6th post I have posted and tell everyone what it is...

And it is my post about VINTAGE PRINTABLES. Vintage Printables is my favourite site ever. It has such beautiful images to offer for free. If you're looking for some quality printable images to hang on your wall, the site is worth looking.

I also remembered the mail art game I took part a while ago. The picture of the end-result is above. This is jam-ATC project called It Starts With A Pencil started by Misti Ko. This piece was started by her with the rubber stamp image of a pencil, I layered it with a Marimekko paper napkin (birches) and then my flickr friend and a highly talented artist bluelotusflower finished it. As you can observe, my collaboration was quite minimal...

Minut on merkitty! Frarin nappasi tägin otsaani, ja nyt minun pitäisi lähettää se eteenpäin. Koska olen tutustunut Frariniin ATCs for all -foorumin välityksellä, jatkan samaa polkua ja merkitsen Peggy apl seeds:n, mikäli hän tämän sattuu näkemään. Sääntönä oli kertoa teille kaikille, mikä oli kuudes blogimerkintäni.

Kuudentena bloggasin Vintage Printables -sivustosta. Se on edelleenkin ehdoton suosikkini, sillä sieltä löytyy aivan uskomattoman hienoa kuvamateriaalia melkeinpä mihin tarkoitukseen tahansa, ja aivan ilmaiseksi. Jos satut etsimään vanhoja kuvia seinällesi ripustettavaksi, niin kannattaa käydä katsomassa.

Muistinpa myös yhden pikkupuuhan, johon osallistuin joitakin aikoja sitten. Yllä olevassa kuvassa on lopputulos. Kyseessä on useamman tekijän yhteistyönä tehty ATC, joka kuuluu Misti Ko:n aloittamaan "It Starts With A Pencil"-projektiin (Se alkaa lyijykynällä). Yllä olevan kortin on Misti aloittanut leimaamalla siihen lyijykynän kuvan, minä kiinnitin siihen lakalla Marimekon koivukuvioisen lautasliinan palasen, ja flickr-ystäväni ja erittäin lahjakas taiteilija bluelotusflower teki viimeistelyn. Oma osuuteni jäi siis melko vaatimattomaksi...

Cleaning up / Siivousta

I thought my blog had become a little too cluttered so I decided to clean it up a bit and change the lay out. The new Blogger design feature is really handy, but it doesn't seem to work exatly the way I'd wish. It lost the settings far too many times during the process and I'm really bugged by the fact that the page footer is not centered.

In the process of making the changes I began to think about the profile part. I'm really a shy person and prefer to keep my privacy even though I love to socialise and make contacts. So instead of adding my real photo I decided to cartoonify myself. In the end I didn't send my photo anywhere nor tried to cartoonify it myself, because I found playing with Yahoo avatars more fun at the time being. Of course my avatar is much prettier than the real me, but it's close enough. It's got the right colours and style and of the faces available I tried to choose the one that most resembled me. (Well, of course I was tempted to choose those deer eyes and nicer looking hair style and...) Anyway, this really looks surprisingly much like the real Susie. I even added the packing boxes in this image as they are present over here around me.

I hope I can soon get some more furniture so that I will be able to return to my desk. My laptop has really become a laptop now that my desk is underneath some high piles of homeless items looking for some cupboard space. It's so much safer to stay away from it right now.

Blogini alkoi tuntua hiukan ahtaalta, joten päätin pikkuisen siivoilla ja muuttaa myöskin blogipohjaa. Uusi suunnittelutyökalu on muuten kätevä, muttei aivan toimi toivomallani tavalla. Valitsemani asetukset katosivat aivan liian monta kertaa, ja kaikkein kiukuttavin piirre on se, ettei sivun alaosaa saa keskitettyä ohjelmalla millään.

Muutosprosessin mittaan sitten tulin miettineeksi myös profiilipuolta. Minähän tykkään kyllä kovasti tehdä uusia tuttavuuksia ja olen seurallinen, mutta pidän myös yksityisyyttä arvossaan. Siksipä ajattelin valokuvani sijasta laittaa profiiliini karikatyyrin. Noh, loppujenlopuksi en sitten kuitenkaan saanut sitä ajatusta vietyä loppuun, kun Yahoon avatarilla leikkiminen tuntuikin hupaisammalta juuri sillä hetkellä. Onhan tämä avatar toki huomattavasti naturellia minääni sievempi, mutta kuitenkin sen verran lähellä, että eiköhän tutut tästäkin kuvasta minut tunnista. Ainakin hiusten väri ja tyyli täsmäävät, enkä edes mitään juhlahepeneitä tähän pyntännyt. Tietysti ne kauriinsilmät, juhlakampaus ja muut pikku muokkaukset olisivat tuoneet ulkomuotoon ylimääräistä hehkeyttä... Tämä on kuitenkin yllättävän näköinen, ja lisäsin vielä ne muuttolaatikotkin, jotka todellisuudessa ovat nyt hyvin näkyvä osa kotiani.

Pitää toivoa, että pian saisi jostain hankittua lisää kalusteita, jotta pääsisi työpöytääkin käyttämään. Sylimikro on nyt todellakin ollut nimensä mukaisessa käytössä, vaikka se aiemmin toimikin pöytäkoneiden korkeammassa kastissa. Nyt on työpöydällä niin paljon koditonta tavaraa kaappitilaa odottamassa, ettei minulla ja koneella ole sen lähellekään mitään asiaa.

Printing scrapbooking pages at home / Skräppisivujen tulostaminen kotona

Sometimes I look up the key words people use when making searches and entering my blog, and I have found out that some people are looking for information on printing their digital scrapbooking pages at home.
I guess most of you already know that there are several commercial printing services providing nice looking photo books of your own photos (yes, even your finished scrapbooking pages are qualified as photos if you save them as jpg images) and I think that's the most economic way to print your scrapbooks. However not all of them are of very high quality. They are usually laser printed and the printing quality can be really lousy.
So if you want your digiscrapping art works to look really classy, it's OK to invest in some good quality photographic paper! Yes, exactly, that costly material, not the normal or even high quality printing paper. However, there's lots of choices within photo papers as well, and it's worth going to your local suplier to see some examples of the material they sell. It's not necessary to have the most expensive super high gloss photographic paper unless you really want a festive look for your prints. And it really depends on the look that you're trying to achieve.
I use matte photo paper for my ATCs as I like the papery feeling of it. The paper I use is not matte the way you might imagine, it's more like normal cardstock type of paper suitable for printing. Yes, it's worth investing in the real printing material. I have tested it myself, and if you go and use some material that's not fitted for printing, the result is likely going to be of odd colour or even variations with the final size of the image.

Joskus katselen, millaisilla hakusanoilla ihmiset etsiytyvät blogiini hakukoneiden kautta, ja olen huomannut, että monet etsivät tietoa skräppisivujen tulostamisesta kotosalla. Varmaan useimmat tietävätkin, että Suomessa fotoliikkeet tekevät asiakkaan omista kuvista valokuvakirjoja, ja ne voi kätevästi tilata netin kautta. Valmiit skräppisivuthan ovat myös valokuvia, jos ne tallentaa jpg-muotoon. Nämä valokuvakirjat ovat myös suhteellisen taloudellinen tapa tulostaa omat digiskräppäykset. Mutta se laatu. Lasertulostetut kirjat eivät aina vastaa ainakaan omia vaatimuksiani. En ole itse kokeillut ulkomaalaisia palveluja, joten en voi sanoa, ovatko sen kummempia.
Kotitulostimen omistaja voi myös panostaa laatuun, ja hankkia kunnon tulostusmateriaalit. Tämä tarkoittaa siis jotain muuta kuin tulostinpaperia. Tulostimiin myytävissä valokuvapapereissa löytyy vaihtelua niin laaduissa kuin hinnoissakin, joten kannattaa itse pistäytyä paikallisen jälleenmyyjän pakeilla katselemassa malleja. Aina ei tarvitse olla sitä kalleinta huippukiiltävää paperia, ellei sitten halua todella juhlavaa lopputulosta.
Itse käytän ATC-korttieni tulostamiseen mattapintaista valokuvapaperia, joka tavallisesta mattavalokuvasta poiketen muistuttaa lähinnä normaalia kartonkia. Normaalista kartongista poiketen se on tietenkin tulostuskäyttöön tarkoitettu, mikä kyllä on arvo sinällään tulostusmateriaalia valitessa. Jos haluat tulostusjäljen muistuttavan sitä, miltä työsi koneen ruudulla näyttää, ei kannata yrittää mennä aidan alta ja ostaa halpiskartonkeja kuvitellen, että ne ovat käypiä tulostukseen. Testattu on; joko värit eivät täsmää millään, tai pahimmillaan tulostuskoko muuttuu ihan silmin havaittavasti (paperin pintamateriaalin mukaan).

Yes, finally. I have actually moved in the beginning of this month, but it doesn't really feel like that since I'm still in the middle of packing boxes. I don't have enough furniture! I'm desperately needing some cupboards to house all of my folders, books, kids' toys and so on... I have been going through all the flea markets and second hand stores I can think of and so far I have found three book shelves. I'm really happy for them. The local Red Cross flea market has some good quality pieces with affordable prices! I haven't kept it a secret that I'm economically challenged, so I really can't afford buying any new ones. One cupboard I found from trashes close to the building where we live, and I'm now re-painting it. I have also been out of Internet for a good while as the Internet connection I got didn't work at all. I hope no-one has become worried for me yet. ;-) I'm alive and kicking. Huh, olen vihdoinkin muuttanut! Oikeastaan tein sen kyllä jo kuun alussa, muttei aivan tunnu siltä, kun vieläkin kökötän muuttolaatikkovuoriston syleilyssä. Minulta puuttuu huonekaluja! Tarvitsen epätoivoisesti kaappeja joihin saisi piilotettua kaikki kansiot, kirjat, lasten lelut ja muut epäedustavat tavarat. Olen rampannut läpi kaikki mahdolliset kirpputorit sekä osto- ja myyntiliikkeet, ja tähän mennessä olen löytänyt kolme kirjahyllyä. Olen todella tyytyväinen Punaisen Ristin Kontista löytämiini edullisiin ja hyväkuntoisiin hyllyihin. En ole pitänyt minään salaisuutena sitä, etten ole kovin varoissani, eikä minulla tosiaankaan ole varaa ostaa uusia kalusteita. Yhden pikkukaapin löysin läheiseltä roskalavalta, ja sitä olen maalailemassa uuteen uskoon. Lisäksi olen ollut virtuaalielämän ulottumattomissa hyvän tovin, sillä nettiyhteyteni ei ottanut millään toimiakseen. Toivottavasti kukaan ei kuitenkaan ehtinyt huolestua. ;-) Elossa ollaan. So much to do and so little time / Aika ei koskaan riitä

I guess I'm not the only one in today's world feeling like there was never enough time for anything. It's not that I would be in any hurry (well, some sort of hurry is given when living with kids), or that I would have a schedule that's too tight... It's more like there was never enough hours in a day, not enough days in a year (not to speak of summer that should be endless in my opinion!) and so on.

What this means is that I have too many plans, too many things I'd like to do and too many places I'd like to see and I feel like I should do them all at the same time! Not because there would be someone forcing me into doing so, but purely because I want to. I do realize one would need super powers to do and see everything I want to, at least if one is planning to do it all at once. But one can always WANT, right? Wanting is not the same thing as getting or making things happen though.

Right now I'm in the middle of a move, sitting in the middle of huge piles and towers of packing boxes. And of course wanting to do something else than packing. (Right, that's why I'm blogging, duh!) Luckily I haven't packed all my sketch books yet, as it seems that ideas are jumping all around me now that I should concentrate on doing something dull and dutyful. I'm usually good at dutyful tasks when they are not boring, but packing is one of those things I'd rather pass. I'm more into planning, developing and designing things than concluding them... I can happily plan "a packing project" - what to pack, how to pack it in an organized fashion, where to get all the materials needed, how much it all will cost and so on - but I would prefer someone else bringing my plan into reality.

So when I'm forced to do something dull (in this case there's only myself to blame though, since it initially was I wanting to move) I'm not much concentrated on what I'm doing, but instead planning ahead. Like now I'm pondering between different ideas of scrapbooking sets, ATCs and so on... Any themes you'd like to suggest? No, I'm not in a need of ideas, the problem usually is I have too many and it would be helpful of you to give an opinion. ;-)

It's OK to comment and leave suggestions! If you have a preferred theme that you'd like to see as a FREEBIE, let me know. Maybe I will be up to the challenge after I've settled down at my new place.

En varmaankaan ole nykymaailmassa ainoa, josta tuntuu, ettei aika riitä mihinkään. Ei sillä, että olisin jotenkin äärimmäisen kiireinen (vaikka lasten kanssa sitäkin tietysti on) tai että minulla olisi tiukka aikataulu. Enemmänkin on kyse siitä, että tuntuu, että aika valuu käsistä tai että sitä alunperinkin on ollut liian rajallinen määrä. Päivässä ei ole riittävästi tunteja, vuodessa päiviä (puhumattakaan kesästä, joka minusta saisi jatkua loputtomiin!) ja niin edelleen.

Tämähän tarkoittaa sitä, että on liikaa suunnitelmia, paljon tehtävää ja nähtävää, ja mieluiten kaikki pitäisi vielä saada tehtyä yhtä aikaa! Eihän minua siihen kukaan pakota, mutta kun vaan haluaisin. Yli-inhimillisiä voimia tietysti tarvitaan, jos aikoo kaiken saada suoritettua kerralla. Mutta halutahan aina saa. Haluaminen ei kylläkään koskaan ole tarkoittanut samaa kuin asioiden tapahtuminen tai niiden eteenpäin vieminen.

Tällä hetkellä olen muuttoaikeissa, ja istun keskellä korkeita muuttolaatikkopinoja ja rojuröykkiöitä. Ja tottakai haluaisin olla tekemässä jotain aivan muuta. (Ja kas, miten bloggaaminen tuli mieleen?) Onneksi luonnoskirjat eivät vielä ole muuttolaatikoissa, sillä ideoita tuntuu punkevan ovista ja ikkunoista heti, kun minun pitäisi keskittyä tekemään jotain tylsää, työlästä ja vastuullista. Olen kyllä hyvä vastuullisissa ja työläissäkin hommissa silloin kun ne eivät ole tylsiä, mutta pakkaamisen voisin mielelläni sivuutta. Minua kiehtovat enemmän kaikenlaisten suunnitelmien tekeminen kuin niiden toteuttaminen. Voin esimerkiksi ihan tyytyväisenä heittää aikaani hukkaan täydellisen "pakkausprojektin" suunnitteluun resurssinhallintaa ja budjetointia myöten, mutta sen raskaan käytännön pakkaamistyön saisi sitten joku puolestani suorittaa.

Kun minun viimein on pakko tehdä jotain tylsää (ja nyt voin syyttää vain itseäni, kun kerran itse halusin muuttaa), niin keskittyminen varsinaiseen tehtävään ei ole kovin todennäköistä. Yleensä lentelen jo uusissa suunnitelmissa. Nytkin pohdiskelen digiskräppipakkauksia, ATC-kortteja ja tietysti aivan muitakin aihepiirejä. Onko ehdotuksia? Ideapula ei kylläkään vaivaa, vaan päin vastoin. Mieleen tulee liiankin mota asiaa kerralla. Mutta koska itse en osaa päättää, mikä olisi paras seuraavan projektin aihepiiri, niin minulle saa jättää toiveita!

Jos sinulla on joku ajatus siitä, mitä haluaisit seuraavaksi saada täältä ilmaiseksi käyttöösi, niin jätähän toki kommentti! Ehkäpä ensi kuun puolella muuton ollessa ohi olen valmis tarttumaan haasteseesi.

Ystäväni Frarin Kanadasta on tarjonnut minulle huomiota kauniissa blogissaan ja jopa napannut jättiläismäisen vilkkubannerini käyttöön. Well, it seems I can't get enough of these brushes by Brushes.500ml. So I created some pink ATC backgrounds for you to use. Just one restriction: don't sell these, no matter on what you use them. You have to click the image above to open the printable file. It's large; 200 dpi / A4.

p.s. Be mindful when printing these, as I've noticed that sometimes the image may shrink if you print it on a material that's not compatible with your printer. For example aquarel paper looks nice but may not give the correct size.

En näköjään saa tarpeekseni tästä sivellinkikkailusta, joten tein sitten vaaleanpunaisia ATC-taustakuvia. Näitä saa käyttää vapaasti yhdellä rajoituksella: näitä ei saa myydä. Siveltimet Brushes.500ml. Yllä olevaa kuvaa klikkaamalla avautuu ladattava kuva, se on iso; 200 dpi / A4.

p.s. Tulostamiseen kannattaa valita oikea materiaali, sillä kuvasuheet saattavat vääristyä tai kutistua materiaalista riippuen. Esim akvarellipaperi näyttää kivalta, mutta kuvasta ei välttämättä tule alkuperäisten mittojen mukainen.

Now I'm furious: why no-one told me before that this program exists? It's an open source freeware that you can download, use and change as you wish, and it works almost like any expensive professional photo editing program. :-) Fantastic. And what else: I just realized that people have made own BRUSHES for this program. And guess what more: it can utilize Photoshop brushes as well! What is it? It's GIMP!

I've been busy making ATCs lately. Yes, it is addictive, like all the crafts and art forms! :-D So I happened to encounter one flickr profile that's a good source of vintage materials like the horse I've used in the card above. Thank you HA!-Designs Artbyheather. Just look for the vintage photos with permission to use them. There's old dictionary pages to download too!

Olen viime aikoina ollut kiireinen ATC-korttieni kimpussa. Kyllä vain se on erittäin koukuttavaa, niinkuin kaikki muutkin taiteen lajit ja käsityöt. Merry Christmas to everyone! Today is Christmas Day and I had a tiny lottery here to see who is going to get my little bird calendar for the year 2010. It's winter solstice today! This means that today is the shortest day of the year. Since I live a bit south of the polar circle, we still have daylight today. Today's Yule Calendar image has autumn colours of brown and orange. :-) The collage image itself contains 6 layers so the construction is quite simple. This was just an information for those who keep counting if there's any effort on digital collages or not. The handwritten part comes from an antique letter that I've scanned for the mere purpose to be used on collages. It's one of my favourite elements and I've used it on several images I've made. I just love old handwritten mail and beautiful handwritings. If you like this ATC and would like to have it, just be the first one to say "gimme" below this post and then e-mail your address to me. Tämän päivän joulukalenterikuvassa on syksyiset ruskean ja oranssin sävyt. :-) Kollaasikuva itsessään sisältää 6 kerrosta, joten rakenne on aika yksinkertainen. It's day 15 already! We are half way of December and it's only a little leap to the year 2010. Incredible. Today's ATC is Brazil themed. If you would like it to be sent to you, just be the first one to leave a comment below this post and then e-mail your address to me. One of the Yule Calendar ATCs had arrived undamaged but in a torn envelope, so I'm wishing a safe journey for the rest of the cards I'm sending out!

All of the Yule Calendar ATCs are digital collages and originals, there are no copies nor re-prints. I have used 12 of the images to make a calendar for the lottery winner on the 25th of December (all readers/followers are automatically included) but these images are not exactly ATC sized and are printed on a glossy photographic paper. ATCs are printed on matte photographic paper before glueing and finishing them as cards.

Nyt on jo 15. päivä! Ollaan puolivälissä joulukuuta, ja ihan kohta on jo vuosi 2010. Uskomatonta. Tämänpäiväisessä ATC:ssa on Brasilia-teema. Jos haluaisit sen, niin kirjoita vain kommenttisi tämän viestin alapuolelle. Jos olit ensimmäinen kommentin jättäjä, lähetä sähköpostitse osoitteesi minulle. Eräs joulukalenterikorteistani on saapunut perille ehjänä, mutta repeytyneessä kirjekuoressa, joten toivon turvallista matkaa muille korteille.

Kaikki joulukalenteri-ATC:t ovat digitaalisia kollaaseja ja alkuperäisiä. Näistä ei tehdä kopioita eikä kaksoiskappaleita. Olen käyttänyt kuvista 12 tehdäkseni kalenterin joulupäivänä suoritettavan arvonnan voittajalle (kaikki lukijat osallistuvat automaattisesti), mutta nämä kuvat eivät ole aivan ATC-kokoisia, ja ne on tulostettu kiiltävälle valokuvapaperille. ATC:t tulostan mattapintaiselle valokuvapaperille ennen kuin liimaan ja viimeistelen ne korteiksi.

It's -20 Celsius degrees here, and the sun is rising. Good morning world! I'm having such difficulties getting up earlier than the sun. Officially the sun rises today at 9:52 am (one hour from now) and sets again at 2:23 pm. But since it's raining, it's hard to tell anything, it's just dull gray during that light time too. People should make good use out of those decorative lights, they would be so beautiful right now!

Today's Feather Mail ATC is a digital collage (as all of them) and the first one to say "it's mine" gets it. It's officially December, at least it is here in Finland. It's past midnight and since I'm still awake I might as well open my Yule Calendar and post the first card. All the ATCs are digital collages with the theme "Feather Mail". If you like the card and would like to have it, just be the first one to leave a comment. This offer will expire on the 2nd of December when I post the next one. If no-one wants the card, I get to keep it myself. That's fine too, because I only make cards that I like, but that's not the idea of give-aways... :-D Remember, this is a low-resolution image, the real card is high-res.

Yule Calendar Give Away 2009 / Joulukalenteri - lahjat 2009

I love giving presents. Even more than receiving them. So this year I'm going to make a little Yule Calendar with give-aways. What I'm going to give then? Well, I'm starting small, so it will be Artist Trading Cards this time. No-one is required to send anything back to me, but of course I will accept that too if you feel like it. My ATCs are digital collages with a title "Feather Mail".

So what is it all about? My Yule Calendar will open on the 1st of December and close on 24th of December 2009 (that'll be Christmas Eve). Each day I will present one of the 24 ATCs. The first one to claim it gets it. Just be the first one to leave a comment, and the card will be yours. But, you can only claim one card. So if you had one already, you can't have an other one. Once you have reserved your card, send an e-mail to me with your address so that I can send the card to you!

Each day I will post one ATC, and the offer is only valid until I post the next one. If no-one claimed the card before that, I will keep the card myself. Sorry, I won't set any fixed hour for my posting, because it kinda depends on how's the household over here... ;-) But I will try to do it rather earlier than later each day (Finnish time, +2 GMT).

If you´re not one of those early birds, don't worry. Everyone/anyone who has registered as a reader/follower of my blog by the 24 th of December, will enter to a small lottery. I will announce the winner on the 25 th of December. Yes, I know that most of you will be away from your computers on Christmas Day and I won't expect you to come to my door step to collect your Christmas present. ;-) It'll be sent to you afterwards as soon as the winner has sent the recepient's address. The prize is not an ATC, but a small table top calendar for the next year with some of the images of the ATCs. (Half of the images, to be precise, since there are 12 months...)

Lahjojen antaminen on minusta ollut aina tosi kivaa, jopa kivempaa kuin lahjojen saaminen. Niinpä tänä vuonna järjestän pienen joulukalenterin. Joulukalenterin luukkujen takaa ilmaantuu tänä vuonna ATC-kortteja, koskapa minulla ei luultavasti ole varaa ostaa teille kaikille juuri sitä mitä keksittekin tänä vuonna joulupukilta toivoa. Kenenkään ei tarvitse lähettää minulle mitään vaihdossa, vaikka sekin on tietysti sallittua. ATC-korttini ovat digitaalisia kollaaseja otsikolla "Feather Mail".

Ja kuinkas tämä sitten toimii? Joulukalenteri aukeaa 1. joulukuuta ja sulkeutuu 24. joulukuuta 2009. Joka päivä esittelen yhden kortin, ja ensimmäinen joka sen haluaa, saa sen. Kortin haluavan tulee jättää kommentti, jossa varaa kortin itselleen, sekä onnistuneen varauksen jälkeen lähettää minulle sähköposti, jossa on nimi ja osoite, minne kortti lähetetään. Kuintenkin, jokainen voi varata itselleen vain yhden kortin. Jos siis jo sait yhden, et voi enää saada toista.

Tarjous on voimassa vain yhden päivän kerrallaan siihen saakka, kun esittelen seuraavan. Tarkkoja bloggausaikatauluja en tule antamaan, koska se jokseenkin riippuu siitä, miltä huusholli täällä kunakin päivänä näyttää. ;-) Joka tapauksessa pyrin tekemään postaukset mieluummin aiemmin kuin myöhemmin, enkä siis takaa, että yksittäinen kortti olisi tarjolla täydet/vain 24 h. Right, I'm definitely heading for the spring. This time you can download a colourful but simple (and FREE) calendar designed by "Cottage Industrialist". And you know what, it´s exactly Finnish style too! Our week starts on Monday (and NOT on Sunday). The only downside is that this calendar goes only until August. I guess we can expect to get a new one by then? ;-) And by the way, there are other printables too if you go and see...

Toden totta, taidan olla kiirehtimässä kevättä. Nytpä voit ladata hienon, värikkään mutta yksinkertaisen, ja ILMAISEN kalenterin, jonka on suunnitellut "Cottage Industrialist". Ja mikä hienointa, tämä kalenteri on suomalaistyyliin tehty, eli viikko alkaa maanantaina, eikä sunnuntaina niinkuin monissa ulkomaalaisissa kalentereissa. Harmillinen puoli on se, että sivuja riittää vain elokuuhun. Mutta siihen mennessä varmaankin saamme jo uuden version. ;-) Ja niin, onhan siellä muitakin tulostettavia ilmaiskivoja, käypäs katsomassa!

Yes, I know I'm a bit early and that we're actually just preparing us for Christmas... But since it happened that I found these cute cards for valentine's Day, Easter and Mother'd Day, I had to mention it right away. I'm sure I'd forget all about it by the time that Valentine's Day arrives! Besides, I'm already waiting for the spring, because that's when the sun will return to the northern hemisphere!

Aivan, olen aika varhain liikkeellä asian kanssa. Ja juu, olemme vasta lähestymässä joulua. Mutta kun nyt kerran satuin löytämään söpöjä ystävänpäivä-, pääsiäis- ja äitienpäiväkortteja, niin pakkohan ne on jo raportoida. There are some really cute angels and mother + children photos (among other things). These are not available in printable sizes, but are still really pretty so try to make a good use of them!
